The Carlton House Block is a cool old building located at 9-13 Hampden Street in Springfield, Massachusetts. It was built a long time ago, in 1873, and shows off a special style called Italianate architecture. This building is important because it reminds us of a time when downtown Springfield was growing into a busy place for businesses and factories. Because of its history and unique look, the Carlton House Block was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
What Does the Carlton House Block Look Like?
The Carlton House Block is in the middle of Springfield's main business area. It's a three-story building made of brick. It has a flat roof and looks like buildings from the Italianate style.
The windows on the upper floors have a special shape, like a rounded arch at the top. Above these windows, there are decorative stone pieces. The very top of the building has a low wall, called a parapet, which was added in the early 1900s.
A fancy stone band goes across the front of the building, just above the third-floor windows. It also wraps around to the left side, where the building faces a small alley.
On the ground floor, there's a big storefront. It has large glass windows in the middle. The main entrance for the shop is on the left, and the entrance to the upstairs offices is on the right.
Who Built the Carlton House Block?
The Carlton House Block was built in 1875 by a man named William Patton. He bought many buildings on Hampden Street during the 1870s and 1880s.
The building gets its name from what was there before it. An old hotel called the Carlton House Hotel used to stand on this very spot.
The Carlton House Block was first built to be rented out. One of the biggest shoe and boot makers in the area used it as their main business place. They stayed there until 1897. Since then, many different businesses have used the building.
