Carm Lino Spiteri (born September 9, 1932 – died February 9, 2008) was an important person from Malta. People sometimes called him Iċ-Ċumpaqq. He was an architect, which means he designed buildings. Carm Lino Spiteri's Life Story
Carm Lino Spiteri was born in Valletta, Malta, on September 9, 1932. He studied hard and became an architect in 1955. As an architect, he worked on many big projects. For example, he helped build the Malta International Airport in Gudja. He also helped turn an old hospital called Sacra Infermeria in Valletta into the Mediterranean Conference Centre. This building is now used for large meetings and events.
Starting a Political Career
Spiteri's journey into politics began in 1970. At that time, two important political leaders, George Borg Olivier and Dom Mintoff, both asked him to join their parties. He could choose to run for election with either the Nationalist Party or the Malta Labour Party. Spiteri decided to join the Nationalist Party. He was then elected to parliament in 1971 during a special election.
Years in Parliament
Carm Lino Spiteri was re-elected to parliament in 1976 and again in 1981. During these years, the Nationalist Party was in the opposition. This means they were not the party in charge of the government. Spiteri often spoke out against the actions of the Labour Party, especially some of their ministers.
In 1987, the Nationalist Party won the election. However, Spiteri himself was not elected that time. He returned to parliament in 1992. When he came back, he was chosen to be the parliamentary whip. A whip is like a team leader who makes sure all members of their party vote together.
End of Political Career and Other Interests
Spiteri's time in parliament ended after the 1996 general election, when he was not re-elected. Even though he was no longer in parliament, he remained very interested in politics.
Outside of politics, he was also the president of a music society called Soċjetà Mużikali Vittorja in his hometown of Mellieħa. In 1996, he received a special medal. This medal was given to celebrate 75 years since Malta gained some self-government.
