Her Early Life and Education
Carmen Sandi grew up in Torrelavega, Spain. She went to the University of Salamanca to get her first degrees in science. Later, she moved to Madrid to earn her PhD in 1988 from the Cajal Institute.
After her PhD, she continued her research in France and the United Kingdom. This extra training helped her learn even more about the brain.
Her Work and Discoveries
Carmen Sandi started her career as a researcher at the Cajal Institute. Then, she became a professor at UNED University in Madrid. For almost ten years, she studied how fear affects our memory.
In 2003, she moved to Switzerland and joined EPFL, a famous university. She is now a full professor and leads the Laboratory of Behavioral Genetics. From 2012 to 2019, she was also the director of the Brain Mind Institute. She helped start the Swiss Stress Network, which connects scientists who study stress.
What Her Lab Studies
Today, Professor Sandi's lab explores how stress changes the brain and our behavior. They look at how stress affects our thinking skills and how we act with others. She is also interested in how people cope with difficult or sad situations.
She has written many scientific papers. Her work has been cited by other scientists over 12,600 times, showing how important her research is.
Leading Science Groups
Carmen Sandi has also held important leadership roles in the science community. From 2010 to 2011, she was the president of the European Brain and Behaviour Society. Later, from 2018 to 2020, she became the president of the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies. She also helps lead a Swiss research group that studies mental health problems.
She is part of the team that reviews articles for several important scientific journals. This means she helps decide which new research gets published.
