Carol Barnett studied music at the University of Minnesota, where she learned about composing, playing the piano, and playing the flute. She earned her bachelor's degree in 1972 and her master's degree in 1976, both in music theory and composition.

After finishing her studies, Carol Barnett traveled and performed as a keyboard player and singer. She also worked as a music copyist, which means she wrote out musical scores for others. From 1991 to 2001, Carol Barnett was the composer-in-residence for the Dale Warland Singers, a famous choral group. This meant she wrote music especially for them. She also taught music theory and composition at Augsburg College in Minneapolis from 2000 to 2015.

Carol Barnett has received several awards for her music. In 2003, she won the Nancy Van de Vate International Prize for Opera for her short opera called Snow. Her musical play, Meeting at Seneca Falls, was featured at a festival in Minnesota in 2006. One of her most popular works is The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass. This piece combines traditional church music with bluegrass style. It was first performed in 2006 and made its debut at the famous Carnegie Hall in New York City in February 2013. It has since become a favorite across the country.

Carol Barnett is a founding member of the American Composers Forum, an organization that supports American composers. Today, she lives in Minneapolis and continues to work as a freelance composer, creating new music.
