Carole P. Meredith is an American scientist who studies grape genetics. She was a professor at the University of California, Davis, where she taught about growing grapes and making wine.

Discovering Grape Family Trees

Before she retired in 2003, Dr. Meredith and her team did amazing work. They were the first to use DNA typing to tell different grape types apart. Think of DNA typing like a special fingerprint test for plants.

Uncovering Grape Parentage

This DNA work helped them figure out the "family trees" of grape varieties. By knowing a grape's parents, scientists can learn about its history. They can also find out where a grape type first came from.

Famous Grape Discoveries

In 1996, Dr. Meredith's team made a big discovery. They found the parents of Cabernet Sauvignon, a very popular wine grape. This was the first time DNA was used this way for grapes. Later, they also found the parents of other well-known grapes like Chardonnay and Syrah.

Her research also showed that some grapes thought to be different were actually the same. For example, they proved that Zinfandel, Primitivo, and Crljenak Kaštelanski are all the same grape. They also found that Charbono and Corbeau grapes are identical.

Awards and Recognition

In 2009, Dr. Meredith was honored for her important work. She was added to the Vintners Hall of Fame. This is a special award for people who have made a big difference in the wine world.

From Lab to Vineyard

In 1986, Dr. Meredith moved to Napa Valley. This area is famous for its vineyards. She would travel from Napa Valley to UC Davis for her work. Her husband, Steve Lagier, was already making wine there.

Starting a Vineyard

After retiring from her university job in January 2003, Dr. Meredith and her husband started their own vineyard. They grow grapes like Syrah, Zinfandel, Malbec, and Mondeuse. Their vineyard is about 4 acres big and is located in the Mount Veeder AVA area of Napa Valley.

Lagier-Meredith Wines

They sell their wines under the name Lagier-Meredith. The first grapevines on their property were planted in 1994. As of 2022, another winemaker named Aaron Pott helps manage the Lagier Meredith Vineyard. He also makes wines there under his own label, Pott Wine.
