Carole Wilkinson (born in 1950) is an Australian writer. She is most famous for her book Dragonkeeper, which came out in 2003.

About Carole Wilkinson

Carole Wilkinson was born in Derby, England. When she was 12 years old, in 1963, her family moved to Australia. She worked as a laboratory assistant for many years. When she turned 40, she decided to try something new.

Her Writing Journey

To become a writer, Carole went to university. While she was studying, she showed some of her writing to a friend. This friend worked in the book publishing world. Because of this, Carole was asked to write her first novel for teenagers.

Since then, she has written many books for different publishers in Australia. She has also written stories for children's TV shows. In 2011, Carole visited St Ignatius College in Adelaide, where students in Year 5 were reading her books.

Carole's daughter, Lili Wilkinson, is also a writer who creates books for young adults.

The Dragonkeeper Series

Dragonkeeper was published in 2003 by Black Dog Books. The story takes place in ancient Han dynasty China. It follows the exciting adventures of a girl named Ping and an old dragon.

Awards for Dragonkeeper

Dragonkeeper has won many awards, including:

  • 2003 Aurealis Award (for Young Adults)
  • 2004 Children's Book Council of Australia Book of the Year Award (for Young Readers)
  • 2004 Queensland Premier's Literary Award (for Best Children's Book)
  • 2006 Kalbacher Klapperschlange (a German Children's Choice Award)

The book was also a finalist for the Patricia Wrightson Prize for Children's Books in 2004. Dragonkeeper was published in the United States in April 2005 and in the United Kingdom in April 2005.

The first follow-up book to Dragonkeeper was Garden of the Purple Dragon, published in 2005. Dragon Moon came out in 2007. There is also a book that tells a story from before Dragonkeeper, called Dragon Dawn. It's about the dragon Danzi's adventures before he lived in Huangling Mountain.
