About Caroline McNairn
Caroline McNairn was born in Selkirk, Scotland, in 1955. Art was a big part of her family. Both her father, John McNairn, and her grandfather, also named John McNairn, were painters. Her father even studied art in Paris in the 1930s. This family background helped Caroline develop her own artistic style.
Caroline studied art at the University of Edinburgh and then at the Edinburgh College of Art. These schools helped her become the skilled artist she was.
Her Art Takes Off
In the early 1980s, Caroline became one of the first new Scottish artists to show her work in big cities like New York and Chicago. An art gallery in Edinburgh called the 369 Gallery helped her. She worked closely with this gallery from the very beginning, not just showing her paintings but also helping other artists as a teacher and adviser.
In 1986, Caroline had a very important art show in New York City. Famous artists like Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat admired her work there. That same year, her art was also shown in Hong Kong, Los Angeles, and Santa Fe. In 1990, she spent a year working and showing her art in the Soviet Union, in cities like Moscow and Odessa.
Life and Family
Caroline was part of a group of artists connected to the 369 Gallery in Edinburgh. This gallery was a new and exciting place for art. Caroline had four solo shows there. She also met her future husband, Hugh Collins, at the gallery in the late 1980s. Caroline played a very important role in helping Hugh make positive changes in his life. They got married after he was released from prison in 1993. Hugh later became a sculptor and an author.
Sadly, Caroline McNairn passed away on September 29, 2010, at the age of 55.
