Carolyn Jane Griffiths is a very important railway engineer. She helped create and lead the UK's Rail Accident Investigation Branch. This group investigates train accidents to find out what happened and prevent future ones.

Carolyn was the Chief Inspector there. This meant she was in charge and reported directly to the person in the government responsible for transport. She also led the Institution of Mechanical Engineers from 2017 to 2018. This is a big group for engineers.

Carolyn Griffiths started working in the railway industry in 1979. She learned a lot about trains and how they work. Her career has been all about making railways safer and better.

Her Achievements

In 2013, Carolyn was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. This is a special honor for engineers who have done amazing things. It shows she is one of the best in her field.

That same year, she received an honorary doctorate from Cranfield University. An honorary doctorate is a special award from a university. It's given to people who have made a big difference, even if they didn't study there. Carolyn received it for her great work in the rail industry.

Leading the Rail Accident Investigation Branch

From 2005 to 2015, Carolyn was the Chief Inspector of the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB). The RAIB is like a detective agency for train crashes. Their job is to figure out why accidents happen. They then make recommendations to stop them from happening again. Carolyn's leadership helped make train travel safer for everyone in the UK.
