Carroll Cottage is a very old house in Kingaroy, Queensland, Australia. It's a special place because it was built way back in 1900. This small timber house is also known as Daniel Carroll's House. It's important because it shows us what life was like for early settlers in the area. The cottage is now listed on the Queensland Heritage Register, which means it's protected for future generations to learn from.

The Story of Kingaroy's First Home

How Kingaroy Began

Long ago, in the 1840s, large farms called pastoral holdings started in southern Queensland. These big farms covered huge areas of land. For about 40 years, they were the main way land was used. But in 1868, a new law changed things. It allowed smaller pieces of land to be settled by many different people. This led to new communities and towns forming.

One of the first important land selections in the Kingaroy area was made by the Markwell brothers in 1878. They chose a large piece of land near the Stuart River. This land became known as the Kingaroy Paddock. Eventually, the whole area got its name from this paddock.

Daniel Carroll's Journey

In 1891, a man named Daniel Carroll chose his own piece of land. It was about 160 acres and was next to the Kingaroy Paddock. Daniel Carroll had come from Ireland in 1887 when he was 20 years old. Before settling, he worked as a coach driver in the area.

By 1898, Daniel Carroll was one of the only Europeans living near where Kingaroy is today. He had built a small hut for himself and a yard for his horses. In 1900, Daniel decided to build a proper house. He hired a builder named Mr. Ferdinand Seng to construct the cottage you see today. He built it because he was going to marry Bridget Pender.

The Railway Arrives

The area around Kingaroy grew with farming. To help transport timber and crops, a railway line was extended. It reached a spot called the "56 mile peg" in 1904. This spot was very close to the Kingaroy Paddock. The railway arriving was a big deal! It was the main reason the town of Kingaroy started right there.

Daniel Carroll and Arthur Youngman, another important landowner, sold pieces of land for town blocks. This happened in 1903-1904. When the first train arrived on December 19, 1904, Carroll Cottage was one of only three buildings at the railway stop. The others were Carroll's new hotel, The Carrollee, and a store. The big party to celebrate the railway's opening was even held in Daniel Carroll's horse paddock!

Carroll's Legacy in Kingaroy

After the railway came, more shops, hotels, and public buildings like churches and schools were built. Kingaroy grew quickly and became more important than nearby towns. Daniel Carroll continued to help Kingaroy grow. He owned many properties and was part of different groups that helped build public facilities. He even gave land for the first Catholic Church and the hospital.

The Carroll family moved to a new house in 1910. But they kept Carroll Cottage and rented it out to other people. Today, the cottage is still owned by members of the Carroll family. The Kingaroy Historical Society looks after it. You can visit it as a museum to see what homes were like long ago.

What Carroll Cottage Looks Like

Outside the Cottage

Carroll Cottage is on a small block of land in Edward Street, Kingaroy. It's a small, single-story timber house. It sits low to the ground on short wooden stumps. A small set of stairs leads up to the front door.

The front part of the house has a steep, hipped roof made of corrugated iron. The back part has a simpler lean-to roof. There's a verandah (a covered porch) across the front of the house. It has a newer wooden fence-like railing. The outside walls are made of timber weatherboards. The windows have curved steel covers above them. These windows are double-hung timber sashes, meaning they slide up and down.

Inside and Around the House

Behind the main house is a separate kitchen building. It's connected by a raised, covered walkway. This walkway is enclosed with corrugated iron. On one side of this area, there's a bathroom, also made of corrugated iron. The kitchen is a simple rectangular building with a sloped roof. It's also made of weatherboards. A small open lean-to has been added to the back of the kitchen, used for storing timber.

Inside the main cottage, the walls are covered with wooden boards that fit together. It has three bedrooms and a living room, called a parlour. The kitchen walls are covered with fibro cement sheeting.

Why Carroll Cottage is Special

Carroll Cottage was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on July 28, 2000. This means it's recognized as an important historical place for several reasons:

A Glimpse into History

Carroll Cottage helps us understand how Queensland's history unfolded. It shows what homes and living conditions were like for early settlers in country areas. As the oldest house built in Kingaroy, it helps us see how the town grew from a small settlement to a busy town because of the railway. It stands out among newer houses and helps us understand Kingaroy's beginnings.

A Typical Early Home

This cottage shows the main features of a small timber house built in a remote country area. It has a simple rectangular shape, a steep hipped roof, a basic four-room layout, and a separate kitchen. The house is a good example of how houses in Queensland were often extended over time.

Simple Beauty

Carroll Cottage has a special charm because of its simple design and small size. It looks like a cozy cottage. Most of its original parts are still there. Because it's now a museum, it helps us imagine what life was like for the people who lived there long ago.

Important to the Community

Carroll Cottage is very important to the people of Kingaroy. It's the oldest house in the settlement that is still in its original spot. It's also part of a community museum run by the local historical society. This makes it a valuable place for everyone to connect with their past.

Connected to Daniel Carroll

The house has a special link to Daniel Carroll. He was a very important person in the founding and growth of Kingaroy. His home tells part of his story and his role in the town's history.
