A Look at Casa Colorada's Past

Casa Colorada has a long history. It might have been a known spot as early as the 1600s. However, it didn't become a community until the early 1800s.

Early Mentions and Community Beginnings

In 1760, a bishop named Tamarón passed by the ruins of "the house they called Colorada." By 1841, it was already a small community. The area is also famous for its old land grants.

The modern town of Casa Colorada officially started with a request for a community land grant in 1823. Even if the grant wasn't fully approved then, the town kept growing. Records show the town was built around 1822 or 1823. It was listed as a New Mexico town in 1833 and 1840.

Travelers' Tales of Casa Colorada

In 1846, a traveler named Wislizenus mentioned the "Casas Coloradas" near sand hills. Another traveler, Abert, noted large ponds filled with water birds north of the town. His group reached the Río Grande River nearby after coming from Abó Pass.

In 1855, W.W.H. Davis described the area north of "La Hoya" as a "young desert." He said the sand made travel hard. The land was mostly barren, except for small patches near the river.

A Name Change and Return to Roots

In the 1920s, the local Post Office was named "Turn." This was because there was a turn in the road at Casa Colorada. This name appeared on many maps for a while. However, the original name, Casa Colorada, is still used today.
