The Casa Serra (which means Serra House) is a really cool building in Barcelona, Spain. It was designed by a famous architect named Josep Puig i Cadafalch. This building is a great example of the Modernisme style, which was popular in Catalonia, Spain, around the early 1900s. You can find it at 126 Rambla de Catalunya, right where it meets the Avinguda Diagonal.
A House with a History
This beautiful building was built between 1903 and 1908. It was meant to be a home for a person named Pere Serra. However, he never actually lived there. Over the years, the Casa Serra has been used for many different things. Today, it is the home of the Provincial Deputation of Barcelona. This is a local government group that helps manage the province of Barcelona.
Old Meets New
In 1981, a part of the original Casa Serra building was taken down. This was the section that faced the Avinguda Diagonal street. In its place, a new office building was constructed between 1987 and 1989. This new building was designed by architects Federico Correa and Alfonso Milá. It was built to house the offices for the local government council.
The new building has a very different look compared to the old Casa Serra. This mix of old and new styles caused some discussion at the time. People debated whether the modern design fit well with the historic architecture.
