His Family and Early Life

Caspar Otto von Glasenapp came from a well-known noble family in Pomerania. His parents were Kaspar Otto von Glasenapp and Ernestina von Zitzewitz. He had several brothers, including Erdmann von Glasenapp, who also became a major general.

In 1700, Caspar Otto married Anna Margarete von Zastrow. They did not have any children together.

Starting His Military Journey

Glasenapp began his military career in 1679. He joined the Kurfürsten Leibregiment, which was an important regiment. He started as a fähnrich, a junior officer rank.

Over the next few years, he steadily moved up. By 1687, he was promoted to second lieutenant. In 1692, he became a chief of staff. Then, in 1695, he was made a captain and a company commander. His regiment was then called the "Fusilier-Garde."

Climbing the Ranks

During the War of Spanish Succession, Caspar Otto von Glasenapp was involved in many battles. He fought in Hungary, along the Rhine River, and in Brabant. He continued to earn promotions for his service.

  • In 1705, he became a major.
  • By 1709, he was a lieutenant colonel.
  • In 1713, he became a full colonel and commander of his regiment.
  • By 1723, he was promoted to major general. He also became the chief of his regiment, the 1st Prussian Infantry Regiment.

Leading Berlin

In 1729, Glasenapp was given an important job: Commander of Berlin. He worked closely with King Frederick William I of Prussia. The king wanted to stop begging and keep the streets of Berlin very clean. Glasenapp helped make sure these rules were followed. People in the city respected his efforts to keep things orderly.

He continued to gain more responsibility in Berlin:

  • In 1732, he became a lieutenant general.
  • In 1735, he was appointed Governor of Berlin. He still kept his role as a regimental commander.
  • In 1740, he became a general of the infantry.
  • Finally, in 1741, he reached the highest military rank: Generalfeldmarschall, or Field Marshal.

In 1742, Glasenapp retired from active military service. However, he remained the Governor of Berlin for the rest of his life. He also kept his high military honors. He passed away in 1747 and was buried in the Berlin garrison church.
