Castelloza facts for kids
Na Castelloza was a noblewoman and a trobairitz from Auvergne, France. She lived in the early 1200s. A trobairitz was a woman who wrote and performed poems and songs in the Occitan language during the Middle Ages.
Her Life and Songs
We know about Castelloza from her biography, called a vida. It says she was married to Turc de Mairona, who was probably a lord. His family got the name "Turc" because they took part in a Crusade around 1210 or 1220.
Castelloza was known for being "very happy," "very smart," and "very beautiful." She wrote several songs about her love for Arman de Brion. He was a nobleman from a higher social class than her. Her songs were about a special kind of love called courtly love. This was an idealized, respectful love often found in medieval poems and songs.
Only three of her songs, and possibly a fourth, still exist today. None of them have their original music. Even with only a few songs, she is one of the most well-known trobairitz. Only Beatriz de Dia has more surviving songs. Castelloza's poems always focused on being completely loyal in love. One expert, Peter Dronke, believes her songs might even form a connected story, like a song cycle.
