Castillo de Gigonza
Castle of Gigonza, a historic Spanish castle.

Castillo de Gigonza is an old castle found in San José del Valle, a town in the province of Cádiz, southern Spain. It sits on the road between Medina Sidonia and Arcos de la Frontera, about 12 kilometers from Paterna de Rivera. This historic site was officially recognized as a Bien de Interés Cultural (which means a "Property of Cultural Interest") in 1993, showing how important it is to Spain's heritage.

In 2009, there were some discussions about repair work happening at the castle. These talks focused on whether the work on the castle tower, chapel, and nearby buildings had all the necessary permissions. This shows how important it is to follow rules when restoring very old and important historical places.

History of Castillo de Gigonza

The area where Castillo de Gigonza stands has been a fortified place for a very long time. People have used this spot for defense since ancient times. The castle you see today has its roots in the Andalusian period of Spain.

What the Castle Looks Like

The castle has a shape that is almost square. It is made up of two main parts. You enter through a narrow, low door that has a strong stone beam above it. The upper floor of the castle has a vaulted ceiling, which means it's shaped like an arch, and it has windows.

The castle grounds are surrounded by a fence. To get into the main courtyard, you go through another door with an arch. This arch proudly displays the coat of arms, or family symbol, of the Casa de Arcos, an important noble family from the past.
