Catherine Muthoni Coffey, born around 1965 in Eldoret, Kenya, is a talented British singer. She became famous as one of the first members of the British hip hop group Stereo MCs. She helped create some of their biggest hits.

Catherine Coffey's Music Journey

Catherine Coffey joined the Stereo MCs early in their career. She was a backing vocalist for their song "Elevate My Mind". This song was part of their album Supernatural, released in 1990. "Elevate My Mind" made history as the first British rap song to appear on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. This was a big achievement for British hip hop music!

Working with Stereo MCs

Catherine continued to work with the Stereo MCs on their next album, Connected, which came out in 1992. She sang on several popular tracks from this album, including "Connected", "Ground Level", and "Step It Up". Her vocals were a key part of the band's sound. She also contributed to their fourth album, Deep Down & Dirty, released in 2001.

Solo Music and Other Projects

Besides her work with Stereo MCs, Catherine Coffey also explored other music projects. In 1996, she was featured on Nearly God, which was the second album by the artist Tricky. This album also included other famous artists like Björk and Neneh Cherry.

Catherine released her own solo album called Mind the Gap in 1997. This album was released only in Japan by Island Records. She also lent her voice to other artists' songs, like "Streets Desire" for Junior Delgado's album Fearless in 1998. She also sang on several tracks for Terranova's debut album Close the Door in 1999 and their second album Hitchhiking Non-Stop With No Particular Destination in 2002.
