Catherine Douglas, Baroness Glenbervie (born February 16, 1760 – died January 30, 1817), was an important woman in British society during the late 1700s and early 1800s. She was also known as Lady Catherine Anne North before her marriage. She became Baroness Glenbervie when she married Sylvester Douglas, 1st Baron Glenbervie.

Who Was Catherine Douglas?

Catherine Douglas was born into a very important family. Her father was Frederick North, 2nd Earl of Guilford. He was a powerful politician who even served as the Prime Minister of Great Britain for a time. Her mother was Anne.

Her Family Life

Catherine married Sylvester Douglas in 1789. Several years later, he was given the title of Baron Glenbervie, which made him a member of the peerage (a group of people with special titles like Duke, Earl, or Baron). This also made Catherine a Baroness.

Catherine and Sylvester had one son named Frederick Sylvester North Douglas. Their son also became a politician and was a Member of Parliament for a place called Banbury. Sadly, he passed away at the age of 28 in 1819.

A Special Job at Court

From 1808 to 1817, Lady Glenbervie had a special job in the royal family. She was the official Mistress of the Robes to Caroline of Brunswick, who was the Princess of Wales. The Princess of Wales was the wife of the future king, George IV. The Mistress of the Robes was a high-ranking position, usually held by a noblewoman, who was in charge of the Princess's clothes and personal affairs. During some of these years, Princess Caroline was living outside of Britain.

Her Legacy

A drawing of Catherine Douglas was created by a famous artist named Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. This drawing is now kept in a well-known place called the Morgan Library and Museum.
