Catherine Madox Brown Hueffer (born November 11, 1850 – died 1927) was a talented artist and model. She was also known as Cathy. Catherine was the daughter of the famous painter Ford Madox Brown. She was connected to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, an important art group. Catherine married a writer named Francis Hueffer.

Early Life of Catherine Madox Brown

Catherine was born in London, England, on November 11, 1850. Her parents were Ford Madox Brown and Emma Matilda Hill. They got married in 1853. Catherine was named after her mother's mother. When she was a baby, Catherine and her mother posed for a painting. It was called Pretty Baa-Lambs.

Marriage and Family Life

Catherine married Francis Hueffer on September 3, 1872. They had two sons who grew up to be writers. Their names were Ford Madox Ford (born 1873, died 1939) and Oliver Madox Hueffer (born 1877, died 1931).

Their daughter was named Juliet Catherine Emma. She married a journalist named David Soskice. They had three sons. One of their sons was Frank Soskice. He later became a very important government official in England.

Francis Hueffer, Catherine's husband, passed away in January 1889. After her mother Emma died in September 1890, Catherine received all of her mother's property.

Catherine's Artistic Career

Catherine started painting with her half-sister, Lucy Madox Brown. They both learned art from their father, Ford Madox Brown. They also worked as his assistants. Many other female artists from the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood also took lessons in the same art studio. These artists included Georgiana Burne-Jones and Marie Spartali Stillman.

Catherine Madox Brown created several beautiful artworks. Here are some of her known pieces:

Art Exhibitions

Catherine's art has been shown in special exhibitions. One exhibition was called 'Uncommon Power'. It featured works by both Lucy and Catherine Madox Brown. This show was held at the Watts Gallery. It ran from September 28, 2021, to February 20, 2022.
