Catriona McKenzie is a talented filmmaker from Australia. She is well-known for directing the movie Satellite Boy and TV shows like Kiki and Kitty and Wrong Kind of Black. She also has her own company called Dark Horse.

Early Life and Education

Catriona McKenzie is an Aboriginal Australian woman. She belongs to the Gunai/Kurnai people from south-eastern Australia. She studied filmmaking at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS). One of her early films was a short movie called The Third Note (1999). She finished her studies with high honors in 2001. After that, she learned about screenwriting at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts.

Filmmaking Career

Satellite Boy and Other Films

Satellite Boy (2012) was Catriona McKenzie's first full-length movie. It was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film also received a special mention at the 2013 Berlin Film Festival. It was nominated for an AACTA Award for Best Film. In 2014, the Australian Directors Guild chose it for the Directors Guild of America's Directors Finder Series.

Television Work

Catriona McKenzie has also worked on many TV series. These include Supernatural, The Walking Dead, Tidelands, Harrow, The Warriors, Dance Academy, The Circuit, Redfern Now, and The Gods of Wheat Street. She was the first Indigenous Australian woman to direct a TV series in the United States. This was the supernatural drama Shadowhunters.

Dark Horse Production Company

In 2018, McKenzie started her own production company called Dark Horse. She hopes this company will help new and different voices tell their stories. She believes there are many stories to share about how white settlement affected Aboriginal culture and people. The first film planned for Dark Horse is Stolen, which she co-wrote with Patricia Cornelius.

Kiki and Kitty Success

The comedy series Kiki and Kitty was written by Nakkiah Lui and directed by Catriona McKenzie. This show won two awards at the Series Mania festival in France in 2018.

Other Activities

Catriona McKenzie was a member of the Film and Television Industry Advisory Committee for Screen NSW. This role helped advise on film and TV projects in Sydney. She is also a member of the Directors Guild of America.
