About Catriona McKenzie

Early Life and Learning

Catriona McKenzie is an Aboriginal Australian woman. She belongs to the Gunai/Kurnai people. These are Indigenous people from south-eastern Australia.

She studied at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS). One of her student films was a short movie called The Third Note (1999). She graduated with high honors in 2001. After that, she studied screenwriting at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts.

Her Work in Film and TV

Satellite Boy (2012) was Catriona McKenzie's first full-length movie. It was produced by David Jowsey. This film was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival. It also received a special mention at the 2013 Berlin Film Festival. The movie was nominated for an AACTA Award for Best Film.

Catriona has also worked on many other TV series. These include Supernatural and The Walking Dead. She also directed episodes of Tidelands and Harrow. Other shows she worked on are The Warriors and Dance Academy. She directed for The Circuit, Redfern Now, and The Gods of Wheat Street.

She made history as the first Indigenous Australian woman. She was the first to direct a TV series in the United States. This show was the supernatural drama Shadowhunters.

In 2018, McKenzie started her own production company. It is called Dark Horse. She hopes this company will help new and diverse voices tell their stories. She believes there are many stories to share. These stories are about how white colonial Australia affected Aboriginal culture and people. The first film planned for Dark Horse is Stolen. Catriona is writing it with Patricia Cornelius.

The comedy series Kiki and Kitty was written by Nakkiah Lui. Catriona McKenzie directed it. This show won two awards at Series Mania in France in 2018.

Helping Others in the Industry

Catriona McKenzie was chosen to be an advisor. She joined the Film and Television Industry Advisory Committee. This committee is part of Screen NSW's Sydney City of Film program. She served on it until 2019 and was reappointed until 2022.

She is also a member of the Directors Guild of America.
