Cayancura, also known as Cayeucura, was an important leader of the Mapuche people. The Mapuche are an indigenous group from what is now Chile and Argentina. Cayancura became a leader, called a toqui, in 1584. He took over after another leader, Paineñamcu, was captured.

Who Was Cayancura?

Cayancura was a brave leader from the Marigüenu region. This area was important to the Mapuche people. He lived during a time when the Mapuche were often fighting to protect their land. This period is known as the Arauco War.

A Leader of the Mapuche

The Mapuche people had their own way of choosing leaders. They valued courage and wisdom. Cayancura was chosen because he was seen as a strong and capable person. He was ready to lead his people in difficult times.

Becoming a Toqui

A toqui was a very important leader for the Mapuche during wartime. This person was chosen by different Mapuche groups to lead their armies. The toqui was like a supreme commander. Cayancura was chosen as toqui in 1584. He had the big responsibility of leading the Mapuche forces against their enemies.

The Siege of Arauco

Cayancura's most famous action as toqui was an attempt to capture the fort at Arauco. A fort is a strong building used for defense. A siege means surrounding a place to try and take it over. The Mapuche warriors tried to cut off supplies and attack the fort.

A Difficult Battle

The siege of Arauco was a very tough fight. The fort was well-defended, and the Mapuche faced many challenges. Even with Cayancura's leadership, the attack did not succeed. It was a difficult moment for the Mapuche forces.

Stepping Down as Leader

After the failed siege in 1585, Cayancura decided to step down from his role as toqui. This is called abdication. He chose his son, Nangoniel, to take his place. This showed how important family and leadership were within the Mapuche culture.
