Cayastá is a town, also known as a comuna, in the province of Santa Fe, Argentina. In 2010, about 3,367 people lived there.
Cayastá is very close to the ruins of the first city of Santa Fe de la Vera Cruz. This old city had to move because of attacks from native groups and regular floods. In 1742, Cayastá became a special settlement for the Mocoví people. This was a place where they could live together.
What Does the Name Cayastá Mean?
The name "Cayastá" first appeared in an old document from the year 1607.
The Origin of the Name
An engineer named Augusto Fernández Díaz studied the word "Cayastá." He believed it came from a change in the sound of "Kollastas." This word is a mix of "Kolla" and "Astay." "Astay" means "moving." So, "Cayastá" could mean "Kolla village that moves." The Kolla were a group of people from the Aimaraes, who had their own language. They were once ruled by the Incas.
