A Look at History
How Cañaveral de León Got Its Name
The name Cañaveral de León tells us a lot about the town. Cañaveral means "a place where reeds grow" in Spanish. Reeds are tall, grass-like plants. They likely grew near a big spring in the town's center. This spring has shaped Cañaveral's history and even its layout. The "de León" part of the name comes from its connection to the Encomienda de León.
The Sister Villages
Cañaveral de León is one of four "sister villages." The other three are Calera de León, Segura de León, and Fuentes de León. These are located in the Badajoz Province. All these lands were taken back from the Muslims in the mid-1200s. This was done by a group called the Order of Santiago. The Greater Commandery of León was in charge of these areas. They helped new people from Castilla y León settle there.
Becoming Its Own Town
King Philip II gave Cañaveral de León the special title of villa on December 30, 1588. This allowed the village to become independent. Before this, it was part of Fuentes de León. Until 1833, Cañaveral de León was part of the Badajoz Province. Later, the town had a disagreement with Hinojales, a nearby village. They argued over who owned an area called Umbría de Hinojales. Hinojales eventually won the court case. Cañaveral de León then lost about 4,500 hectares of land.
