Cecile Emeke facts for kids

Cecile Emeke is a British filmmaker, writer, and artist. She was born in London and has Jamaican and English family roots. She is well-known for her online documentary series called Strolling. She also created the short film and web series Ackee & Saltfish. Cecile Emeke's work has been featured by news outlets around the world. In 2015, Broadcast magazine named her one of their "Hot Shots," recognizing her talent.

Creative Works

Ackee & Saltfish

In 2014, Cecile Emeke directed a short film titled Ackee & Saltfish. The film follows two friends, Olivia and Rachel, played by Michelle Tiwo and Vanessa Babirye. They are searching around East London for a traditional Jamaican dish called ackee and saltfish. This short film later became a web series in February 2015.

The Strolling Series

Also in 2014, Emeke launched the first episode of her web series Strolling on YouTube. In this documentary series, Emeke walks through the streets of London. She talks with Black men and women about many different topics. These include identity, mental well-being, popular culture, and how neighborhoods change.

After the British version, Emeke used the same idea for Black people in other countries. In February 2015, she started Flâner. This series features French people in Paris. They discuss French history, policing, and Black French culture.

Later, in September 2015, Emeke launched Wandelen. This series focuses on Black Dutch people in Amsterdam and London. They talk about Black Dutch culture, immigration, and the tradition of Zwarte Piet. They also discuss mental well-being and how Islam is sometimes seen in terms of race.

In October of the same year, she started the Italian version, passeggiando. This series covered topics like Italian colonial history and Italian citizenship. The Strolling series is no longer available on YouTube, and Emeke's account is no longer active.

Other Projects

In October 2014, Emeke released Fake Deep. This was a poem she wrote, performed by several artists. In June 2015, Emeke released a short film called Lines. This film explored songs and lyrics that were important to the people she interviewed. In both of these films, Emeke looked at ideas of feminism within the Black community around the world.

Cecile Emeke also worked as a director for the first season of Issa Rae's TV series Insecure. She also directed for the British television series In the Long Run, working with Idris Elba.
