About Meeting Two Queens (1991)

Meeting Two Queens, also known as Encuentro entre dos Reinas, is a special film by Cecilia Barriga. In this movie, she re-edited scenes from old Hollywood films. These films featured famous stars like Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich. Barriga wanted to show these stars in a new way. She aimed to create a space where people could see themselves represented. This film helped to re-imagine these stars as important figures. They became icons for movements that celebrated diverse identities in the early 1990s.

Meeting Two Queens also connects with feminist ideas. It was made by a fan for fans of Garbo and Dietrich. These stars are very important in film history. Barriga's film helps people feel good about who they are. It shows how Hollywood role models can be inspiring. This can be very empowering for people finding their own identity.

Film Scholars Discuss the Film

Film experts have studied Barriga's work. Mary Desjardins wrote in Film Quarterly that these films are considered avant-garde. This means they are experimental and new. They are made by taking parts from different films. This helps viewers think about how all films create meaning.

The critic B. Ruby Rich also commented on the film. In her book, New Queer Cinema: The Director’s Cut, she said Meeting Two Queens "re-edits Dietrich and Garbo movies to construct a dream narrative." She noted it brings the characters together in a new story. Kelly Hankin, in The Girls in the Back Room: Looking at the Lesbian Bar, added that the film "skillfully juxtaposes spare parts from a range of classical Hollywood films." This creates a unique story between Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich.
