About Cecily von Ziegesar
Early Life and School
Cecily von Ziegesar was born in New York City. Her father, Franz Albrecht von Ziegesar, was a business leader. When she was a child, Cecily dreamed of becoming a ballerina. She started dance lessons at age three. At eight, she tried out for a famous ballet school but was not accepted.
As a teenager, she went to The Nightingale-Bamford School in Manhattan. She traveled from Connecticut to New York City very early each morning for school. After graduating, she attended Colby College. She then spent a year in Budapest, working at a local radio station. Later, she returned to the United States to study writing at the University of Arizona, but she left school soon after.
Her Writing Career
Cecily von Ziegesar started her writing career in New York City. She worked at a company called Alloy Entertainment. There, she got the idea for the Gossip Girl series. These books show the lives of rich teenagers.
The Gossip Girl Books
The Gossip Girl series quickly became very popular. In 2002, the books reached the top of The New York Times Best-Sellers list. Later, a spin-off series called The It Girl also became a best-seller in 2005.
The fictional school in Gossip Girl, called Constance Billard School for Girls, is based on an exaggerated version of Cecily's own high school, Nightingale. In 2011, she released another book called Psycho Killer. It was a spin-off from her first novel.
Gossip Girl on TV
The Gossip Girl books were made into a television show by The CW in 2007. Some fans of the books felt the TV show changed too much from the original stories. However, Cecily von Ziegesar said that the main ideas of the show were still true to her vision. She was happy that the show was set in New York City, just like her books. She even made a short appearance in the show's fourth season finale in 2011.
Gossip Girl as a Graphic Novel
In 2009, a company called Yen Press announced they would create a graphic novel version of Gossip Girl. They worked with a South Korean artist named Baek Hye-Kyung. These graphic novels do not retell the original books. Instead, they feature new stories with the same characters. The first chapter appeared in a magazine called Yen Plus in January 2010.
