Early Life and School Days
Cecily von Ziegesar was born in New York City. Her father, Franz Albrecht von Ziegesar, was a business leader. Her mother is Olivia James. Cecily always dreamed of becoming a ballerina. She started dance lessons when she was three years old. At age eight, she tried out for a special ballet school but was not accepted.
As a teenager, she went to The Nightingale-Bamford School in Manhattan. She traveled from Connecticut very early each morning to get there. After high school, Cecily went to Colby College. She then spent a year in Budapest, Hungary, working at a radio station. Later, she returned to the United States to study writing, but she left college soon after.
Cecily's Writing Career
How Gossip Girl Began
Cecily von Ziegesar worked at a book company called Alloy Entertainment in New York City. There, she got the idea for the Gossip Girl series. These books show the lives of rich teenagers. The series quickly became very popular. It reached the top of The New York Times Best-Sellers list in 2002.
The fictional Constance Billard School for Girls in the books is based on an exaggerated version of Cecily's own high school. In 2005, a spin-off book series called The It Girl also became a best-seller. In October 2011, Cecily released another book called Psycho Killer, which was a spin-off of her first novel.
Gossip Girl on TV
The Gossip Girl books were made into a TV show by The CW network in 2007. Some fans of the books felt the TV show changed too much from the original stories. However, Cecily von Ziegesar said that the main ideas of the plot stayed true to her vision. She was happy that the show was still set in New York City. Cecily even appeared briefly in the TV show's fourth season finale on May 16, 2011.
Gossip Girl as Graphic Novels
In December 2009, a company called Yen Press announced a new project. They worked with a South Korean artist named Baek Hye-Kyung. Together, they created a graphic novel version of the Gossip Girl series. These graphic novels tell new stories with the same characters, instead of just retelling the original books. The first chapter came out in January 2010 in a magazine called Yen Plus.
