Cedric Solosolo Asuega Gates is a politician from Hawaii. He served as a member of the Hawaii House of Representatives. This is a group of people who make laws for the state of Hawaii. He represented the 44th district from 2016 to 2022. Then, he represented the 45th district from 2022 to 2024. He is a member of the Democratic Party.
Early Life and Education
Cedric Gates has a mixed background. His family comes from both African-American and American Samoan cultures. His mother, Easter Asuega Gates, passed away in 2006. His father, William Gates, passed away in 2014.
His family says he is the great-grandson of Solosolo Mauga Asuega. Solosolo Mauga Asuega was a very important leader. He was the High Chief of Pago Pago, a place in American Samoa.
Cedric Gates went to Waianae High School. After high school, he studied at Leeward Community College. In 2013, the Governor of Hawaii, Neil Abercrombie, recognized him. He was honored as an "Outstanding Advocate for Children and Youth." This award showed his dedication to helping young people.
Political Career
Cedric Gates first ran for office in 2014. He was a candidate for the Green Party in District 44. He did not win that election. The person who won was Jo Jordan.
In 2016, Gates ran against Jo Jordan again. This time, he ran as a candidate for the Democratic Party. He won the Democratic primary election. A primary election is when people choose which candidate from a party will run in the main election. After winning the primary, he then won the general election against Marc Pa'aluhi.
When he started his job, Cedric Gates was 23 years old. This made him the youngest person serving in the Hawaii state legislature at that time. After his first term, he was reelected. He won his elections again in 2018 and 2020.
In 2024, Cedric Gates ran for a seat in the Hawaii State Senate. This is another part of the state's law-making body. He ran for District 44. However, he was defeated by Samantha DeCorte in that election.
