Who Was Cenberht?

Cenberht's father was named Cedda. His grandfather was Cutha, who might also be known as Cuthwine. Cenberht was a distant cousin of another king, Cenwalh of Wessex.

Cenberht also had two famous sons. Their names were Caedwalla and Mul. Both of his sons later became kings.

Cenberht's Time as King

We don't know much about Cenberht's rule. Most of what we know comes from an old book. This book is called the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle.

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle tells us that Cenberht died in the year 661. It also mentions another person, Cuthred, who died in the same year.

Historians believe that Cenberht might have shared power. He likely ruled alongside King Cenwalh. He might have been a junior king. Or he could have been a sub-king of a smaller area within Wessex.
