It was made up of parts of several older areas, including places like Al Mintaqah al Wusta, Ar Rifa' wa al Mintaqah al Janubiyah, Madinat 'Isa, Sitrah, and A'ali. These were all different parts of Bahrain that came together to form the Central Governorate.

What is a Governorate?

A governorate is a type of administrative division used in many countries, especially in the Middle East. It's like a big district or region that helps the government manage different parts of the country more easily. Each governorate usually has its own local government or officials who help run things like public services and local projects.

Bahrain's Governorates

Bahrain is a small island country located in the Persian Gulf in the Middle East. For a long time, it was divided into several governorates to help organize its cities and towns. These divisions help with things like planning new roads, managing schools, and providing services to people living in different areas.

Why Did the Central Governorate Change?

The Central Governorate existed until September 23, 2014. On that date, the government of Bahrain decided to reorganize its administrative areas. This meant that the Central Governorate was dissolved, and its parts were moved into other existing governorates.

Reorganizing for Better Management

Countries sometimes change their administrative divisions for many reasons. It could be to make local government more efficient, to better serve the people, or to adjust to changes in population. When the Central Governorate was dissolved, its areas were merged into the Capital Governorate, the Northern Governorate, and the Southern Governorate. This change aimed to improve how services were delivered across the country.

Where Was the Central Governorate?

The Central Governorate was located in the central part of Bahrain. This area included a mix of residential neighborhoods, commercial zones, and some important historical sites. It was a busy and important part of the country, home to many people and businesses.

Important Areas Within the Former Governorate

Some of the places that were once part of the Central Governorate included:

  • Madinat 'Isa: This is a well-known town in Bahrain, named after a former ruler. It's a residential area with schools and shops.
  • Sitrah: This is an island and a town located off the east coast of Bahrain. It's known for its port and industrial areas.
  • A'ali: This area is famous for its ancient burial mounds, which are very old historical sites.

These areas, and others, now belong to different governorates after the reorganization in 2014.
