The Chamí antpitta (Grallaria alvarezi) is a special kind of bird. It belongs to a group of birds called Grallariidae. This bird lives only in Colombia, which means it is endemic there.
The Chamí antpitta is part of a larger group of birds known as the rufous antpitta species complex. This means it's closely related to other rufous antpittas, but it's a distinct species. Scientists first described this bird in 2020. The scientists who discovered it were Andrés M. Cuervo, Carlos Daniel Cadena, Morton L. Isler, and R. Terry Chesser.
What is the Chamí Antpitta?
Scientists discovered the Chamí antpitta was a unique species. They found it was different from other birds in the rufous antpitta group. They looked at its feathers (called plumage). They also listened to its calls (vocalizations). Finally, they studied its genes to see the differences.
The common name "Chamí" comes from the Embera Chamí indigenous community. These people live in the western mountains of Colombia. Another animal, a frog called Nymphargus chami, is also named after the Chamí people. The scientific name alvarezi honors a Colombian bird expert. His name was Mauricio Álvarez Rebolledo.
Where Does the Chamí Antpitta Live?
The Chamí antpitta lives only in the western Andes mountains of Colombia. You can find them from the Antioquia area in the north. They live all the way south to the Cauca area. They are found west of the Cauca River.
These birds live high up in the mountains. They prefer places that are 2,350 to 3,650 meters above sea level. That's like living on top of very tall buildings! They make their homes in wet mountain forests. They also live at the edges of these forests.
The Cauca River acts like a natural border. It separates the Chamí antpitta from a bird that looks very similar. This similar bird is called the Equatorial antpitta.
