Chance, South Dakota facts for kids
Chance is a small, quiet place in Perkins County, South Dakota, in the United States. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of the larger county. You can find Chance in the northeastern part of Perkins County, near where two creeks, Hart Creek and Thunder Butte Creek, meet.
Discovering Chance
History of Chance
Chance got its own post office way back in 1901. This was an important place for people to send and receive mail. The post office stayed open for many years, finally closing its doors in 1958.
There are a couple of ideas about how Chance got its unique name. One idea is that it was named after a local farm called the Chance Ranch. Another story says that when people were trying to get the post office started, they thought there was "little chance" their plan would work. But it did!
For a while, Chance even had its own newspaper. It was called The Chance Record. Newspapers were very important for sharing news and stories in communities during that time.
