Chao Chantharath (Lao: ເຈົ້າຈັນທະຣາດ; 1799–23 August 1870) was a king of Luang Phrabang. He ruled from 1852 to 1868. During his time, Luang Phrabang was under the rule of Siam (now Thailand). King Chantharath faced many challenges. He worked to protect his kingdom from different threats.

King Chantharath: A Ruler of Luang Phrabang

Chantharath was born in 1799. He was the second son of King Manthathurath. He became king in 1852. This happened after his older brother, Sukkhasoem, passed away.

Challenges During His Reign

King Chantharath's time as ruler was not easy. His kingdom faced many serious problems. These problems came from inside the country and from other regions. There were also international threats.

Dealing with Rebels and Conflicts

In 1864, a group called the Haw rebels attacked the country. These rebels caused a lot of trouble. King Chantharath worked to free the Principality of Xiangkhouang. This area was being troubled by both Vietnamese forces and the Haw rebels. He fought to bring peace and control back to these lands.

The Return of a Sacred Buddha

A very important event happened during his rule. In 1828, the Siamese king, Mongkut, returned the Phra Bang Buddha statue to Luang Phrabang. This Buddha statue is very sacred. Its return was a big moment for the people. It showed the importance of their culture and beliefs.

End of His Rule

King Chantharath passed away in 1870. After his death, his brother, Oun Kham, became the next king. Chantharath is remembered for leading his kingdom through difficult times. He worked hard to protect his people and their land.
