The Chapel of the Christ (Spanish: Capilla del Cristo) was an old Roman Catholic chapel. It was located in a town called San Pablo del Monte in Tlaxcala, Mexico. This chapel was built a long time ago, in the 18th century.

Sadly, the chapel was torn down on the night of July 25, 2015. This happened because the local community, or barrio (neighborhood), decided to remove it. Even though the chapel was a "Historical Landmark of Tlaxcala," it was still demolished. This meant breaking a law that protects old buildings. The reason given for its demolition was to make the newer Chapel of Christ the King easier to see. The old chapel was blocking the view of the new one.

What Happened to the Chapel?

The Chapel of the Christ was destroyed using big machines on July 25 and 26, 2015. The INAH (Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia) is a group that protects historical sites in Mexico. On July 28, they publicly said that destroying the chapel was a "barbaric act." They asked for the people responsible to be punished.

The Bishop of Tlaxcala, Francisco Moreno Barrón, said that the local priest did not know about the demolition. Because the chapel was a protected historical site, destroying it was a serious offense. The Attorney General's Office took over the investigation.

At first, people thought unknown individuals had destroyed the chapel. But later investigations showed that local community leaders, called "majordomos," were likely responsible. These leaders help organize religious events and festivals. They said they decided to demolish the chapel because it was falling apart. They also said they had told authorities many times that the building needed repairs, but nothing was done. So, it was seen as a group decision supported by most people in the neighborhood.
