Charibert of Laon facts for kids
Charibert (also spelled Caribert or Heribert) was an important person in early European history. He was the grandfather of Charlemagne, one of the most famous kings of the Franks. Charibert's daughter, Bertrada of Laon, became Charlemagne's mother.
Who Was Charibert?
Charibert was a Count of Laon, a region in what is now France. We know about his mother, Bertrada of Prüm, because they both signed important documents together. For example, in 721, they helped start the Abbey of Prüm. In the same year, they also gave a gift to the Abbey of Echternach. These records help historians understand his family connections. Some historians believe his father might have been Martin of Laon.
Charibert's Family
We do not know the name of Charibert's wife. However, we do know he had at least two daughters.
- Bertrada of Laon was one of his daughters. She married Pippin the Younger. Pippin was a very powerful leader, first serving as the "mayor of the palace" for the regions of Neustria and Burgundy. He later became the king of the Franks.
- Gerberge was another daughter. She married Lambert de Treves von Hornbach.
When Did Charibert Live?
Charibert died before the year 762. This date is known from a document signed by his daughter and son-in-law.
