Charles Aemilius Oldham (born in 1831 – died March 30, 1869) was an Irish geologist who did important work in India. He was the brother of Thomas Oldham, who was also a well-known geologist and worked with the Geological Survey of India.

Early Life and Education

Charles Oldham was born in Dublin, Ireland. His parents were Thomas Oldham and Margaret Oldham. He went to Dublin University starting in 1846. He finished his studies there in 1852. After that, he continued his education at the School of Mines in London.

Working in India

In 1856, Charles Oldham joined the Geological Survey of India. This organization studies the Earth's rocks and land in India. He worked as a Deputy Superintendent in an area called the Madras Presidency. This was a big responsibility, like being a manager for geological projects.

Family Life

In 1868, Charles Oldham married Evelyn. Her father was Professor William King, who was also a geologist. Charles and Evelyn had a son named C. E. A. W. Oldham.

A Short Life

In December 1868, Charles Oldham went back home to Ireland. He seemed healthy at the time. However, just two months later, he became very ill and had to go to the hospital. He sadly passed away on March 30, 1869, when he was only 38 years old.

Important Discoveries

During his time working in India, Charles Oldham made a significant discovery. He found stone tools made of a rock called quartzite. These tools were found in a place called Rayachoti, which was part of the Madras Presidency. Finding these ancient tools helped scientists learn more about early human history in the region.
