Life Story of Charles Ancillon

Early Life and Family Background

Charles Ancillon was born in Metz, France, on July 28, 1659. He came from a well-known family of Huguenots. Huguenots were French Protestants who faced tough times in France.

His father, David Ancillon, was a pastor. Because of a big change in French law, his father had to leave France. This change was the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. The Edict of Nantes was a law that had given Protestants certain rights. When it was taken away, many Huguenots had to leave France. David Ancillon became a pastor for the French Protestant community in Berlin.

Education and Early Career

Charles Ancillon studied law in several cities, including Marburg, Geneva, and Paris. He became a lawyer in Paris.

The Huguenots in Metz asked him to speak for them to King Louis XIV. Charles tried to convince the king to let Metz be an exception to the new law. But his efforts were not successful. So, he joined his father in Berlin.

Life in Berlin and Important Roles

In Berlin, Charles Ancillon quickly got important jobs. Elector Frederick III appointed him as a "judge and director of the Berlin colony." This meant he helped manage the French people who had moved to Berlin.

He also became the first headmaster of the Französisches Gymnasium Berlin. This was a special school for French-speaking students. Before this, he had written books about the Edict of Nantes and its effects. People trusted him more for his good character than for his writing style.

In 1687, Ancillon was put in charge of the Academie des nobles. This was a main school in the state. Later, he worked as a diplomat. He helped with important talks that led to the elector becoming the "King in Prussia."

In 1699, he took over from Samuel Pufendorf as the elector's historian. In the same year, he also became the judge for all French refugees in the Margraviate of Brandenburg.

Contributions to Education and Legacy

Charles Ancillon is best known for his work in education in Brandenburg-Prussia. He also helped to create the Academy of Berlin. He worked with a famous thinker named Gottfried Leibniz on this project.

One of his most important books is "Histoire de l'etablissement des Francais refugies dans les etats de Brandebourg." This book, published in Berlin in 1690, tells the story of French refugees settling in Brandenburg.
