Charles Francis Bastable (1855–1945) was an important Irish economist. He was a professor at Trinity College, Dublin, for many years. He taught about economics and law.

Bastable was born in 1855. His father was a priest. Charles studied at Trinity College, Dublin, from 1873 to 1878. He earned a top degree in history and political science.

A Bright Student and Professor

After college, Bastable thought about becoming a lawyer. He became a lawyer in Ireland in 1881. But the next year, he decided to teach instead.

Teaching at Trinity College

In 1882, Bastable became the Whately Professor of Political Economy at Trinity College, Dublin. This was a very important job. He stayed in this role until he retired in 1932. He also became the Regius Professor of Laws at Trinity College in 1908. He held both positions until 1932.

Bastable also taught at Queen's College, Galway, from 1883 to 1903. There, he was a professor of law and economics. Later, he taught law and international law at Trinity College from 1902 to 1908.

His Contributions to Economics

Charles Bastable made big contributions to how we understand international trade and finance. This means he helped explain how countries buy and sell things from each other. He also explained how money moves between countries.

He was one of the people who helped start the Royal Economic Society. This is a group for economists in the United Kingdom. In 1915, he was chosen as a Fellow of the British Academy. This is a special honor for people who have done great work in social sciences.
