Charles Box was born on February 24, 1951. He is an American politician. He made history as the first African-American mayor of Rockford, Illinois. At the time, Rockford was the second largest city in Illinois.
Becoming Mayor of Rockford
Charles Box was elected mayor of Rockford in 1989. He ran as a member of the Democratic Party. He won the election with a large number of votes. He received 63% of all votes. He won in all 14 areas, called wards, of the city.
A Historic Election
When Charles Box was elected, it was a very important moment. He became the first African-American mayor in Rockford's history. He officially started his job on April 24, 1989. This was a big step for the city.
Serving as Mayor
Charles Box served as mayor for three terms. A "term" is a period of time someone holds an office. He was mayor from 1989 until 2001. After serving for 12 years, he decided not to run for mayor again in 2001.
After His Time as Mayor
After leaving the mayor's office, Charles Box continued his public service. In 2006, the Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich chose him for a new role. Box was appointed to lead the Illinois Commerce Commission. This group helps to control businesses that provide services like electricity and gas.
