Charles Erskine (born October 21, 1716 – died June 25, 1749) was a Scottish lawyer and politician. He served in the House of Commons of Great Britain, which is like a main part of the British government, from 1747 until he passed away in 1749.

Who Was Charles Erskine?

Charles Erskine was an important person in Scotland during the 1700s. He was known for his work as a lawyer and for being a politician. This means he helped make laws and decisions for the country.

Early Life and Education

Charles was the oldest son of Charles Erskine, Lord Tinwald, who was also a very important lawyer. Charles went to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, a famous university in England. After that, he studied law at a place called the Middle Temple. In 1739, he officially became a lawyer, which is called being "called to the bar." He also joined another legal group, Lincoln's Inn, in 1743.

Becoming a Politician

In 1747, there was a big election in Britain. Charles Erskine was chosen to become a Member of Parliament (MP) for a place called Ayr Burghs. An MP is someone who represents their area in the government. He was supported by a powerful person named the 3rd Duke of Argyll. This Duke helped him get elected.

Charles served as an MP for only two years. He sadly passed away in 1749 when he was just 32 years old.

Charles Erskine had a younger brother named James Erskine, Lord Alva. James also became a well-known person later in life.
