Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Charles Fell, D.D. (1687–1763) was an English Roman Catholic priest. He was known for writing a book about the lives of saints.

Early Life and Education

Charles Fell was born in England in 1687. His family originally came from France, and his first name was Umfreville. He began his studies in Paris, learning about philosophy and religion. In 1706, he went to St. Gregory's Seminary in Paris to continue his education. The next year, he moved to Douay to improve his English and finish his religious studies.

Becoming a Priest and Author

Charles Fell returned to Paris in 1709. In 1713, he became a priest. Three years later, in 1716, he earned a special degree, becoming a Doctor of Divinity. After his studies, he moved to London, England. There, he spent his free time writing a book called 'The Lives of Saints'. This book shared stories about important religious figures and church holidays.

Later Life and Challenges

Charles Fell's book, 'The Lives of Saints', caused some discussion. Another priest, Robert Witham, had some criticisms about the book. He felt that Fell had used too much information from other writers and didn't include enough stories about miracles. Writing and publishing his book also led to financial problems for Fell. He had trouble paying back money he owed. Later, in 1732, there was a disagreement about his election to a church group. This issue was decided against him after an appeal. Charles Fell passed away in London on October 22, 1763.
