Charles FitzCharles, 1st Earl of Plymouth (born around 1657 – died October 17, 1680) was a son of King Charles II of England and Catherine Pegge. He was given the important titles of Viscount Totness and Baron Dartmouth. Charles FitzCharles was also known by the nickname "Don Carlos." He passed away at a young age while serving in the military in Tangier.

Early Life and Royal Connections

Charles FitzCharles was born around 1657. His father was Charles II of England, and his mother was Catherine Pegge. Charles II met Catherine Pegge when he was living in exile outside England.

Because of his royal connection, Charles FitzCharles was allowed to use the royal coat of arms. He was also given a special addition to his coat of arms called a "baton sinister." This showed his connection to the royal family.

Education and Nickname

Charles was educated abroad, likely in Spain. This is probably why he was known by the nickname "Don Carlos." He was prepared for a life of important duties.

Becoming an Earl

When Charles was still young, he was given several important titles. On July 28, 1675, he became a peer. This meant he was given the titles of Baron Dartmouth, Viscount Totness, and Earl of Plymouth. These titles were meant to encourage him to be a good leader. They also prepared him for managing important affairs when he grew older.

Marriage

On September 19, 1678, Charles FitzCharles got married. His wife was Lady Bridget Osborne. She was the third daughter of Thomas Osborne, 1st Duke of Leeds. Her father was a very important person, serving as the Lord High Treasurer. Their wedding took place at St Mary's Church in Wimbledon, Surrey.

Friendships and Adventures

Charles FitzCharles was friends with the writer Thomas Otway. He helped Otway get a job as a cornet (a junior officer) in a cavalry regiment. This regiment was serving in Flanders.

Later, Charles also joined his friend John Sheffield, 1st Duke of Buckingham and Normanby on a dangerous journey. They traveled to the Colony of Tangier. Even though it was known to be risky, Charles insisted on going with his friend.

Death in Tangier

In 1679, the Sultan Moulay Ismail of Morocco tried to capture the town of Tangier. He didn't succeed, but he started a very difficult blockade around the town.

Military Service

To help defend Tangier, a new military group was formed on July 13, 1680. It was called The King's Own Royal Regiment. Charles FitzCharles was made the first Colonel of this regiment.

Tragic End

Sadly, Charles died from a serious illness called dysentery on October 17, 1680. He was only 23 years old. He did not have any children. After his death, the English eventually had to leave Tangier.

Because Charles had no children, his title of Earl of Plymouth ended. However, the title was given to someone else two years later.

Burial

Charles's body was brought back to England. He was buried at Westminster Abbey on January 18, 1681. His wife, Lady Bridget, later remarried in 1706. She passed away in 1718.
