Charles Henry Parry (1779–1860) was an English doctor and writer. He was known for his medical work and for writing books about history and other topics.

Who Was Charles Henry Parry?

Charles Henry Parry was born in Bath, England, in 1779. His father, Caleb Hillier Parry, was also a famous doctor. Charles followed in his father's footsteps.

Early Life and Education

Charles studied medicine at the University of Göttingen in Germany. In 1799, he traveled through the Harz mountains with the famous poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. He also explored Scandinavia with his friend Clement Carlyon. Charles earned his medical degree from the University of Edinburgh in 1804.

His Medical Career

In 1806, Charles became a licensed doctor with the Royal College of Physicians. He was also chosen to join the Royal Society in 1812. This is a very old and respected group of scientists.

He worked as a doctor in Bath for many years. From 1818 to 1822, he was a physician at the General Hospital there. Later, he stopped practicing medicine and moved to Brighton. He passed away in Brighton in 1860. His burial place is in Weston, Bath.

Charles Henry Parry was also a writer. He wrote several books and papers on different subjects.

  • On Fever and its Treatment in General, translated from a German book in 1801.
  • Commentatio inauguralis de synocho tropico, vulgo febre flava dicta, a paper he wrote about tropical fever in 1804.
  • The Question of the Necessity of the existing Corn Laws, a book from 1816 about laws affecting food prices and farming.
  • Additional Experiments on the Arteries of warm-blooded Animals, published in 1819. In this book, he defended his father's medical ideas.
  • Introductory Essays to Collections from the unpublished Medical Writings of the late Caleb Hillier Parry, M.D., essays from 1825 introducing his father's medical writings.
  • Winchcombe: a poem, a poem he wrote that appeared in a book about Cheltenham in 1826.
  • The Parliaments and Councils of England, a big book from 1839 that listed the history of England's government meetings from William I to 1688.
  • A Memoir of the Rev. Joshua Parry, a book about his relative, Joshua Parry, published after Charles's death in 1872.
