Growing Up in a Musical Family
Charles Jane Ashley was born in London in 1773. He was the third son of John Ashley, who was also a musician. Charles had several brothers who were also involved in music, including General Charles Ashley (a violinist), Richard Ashley, and John James Ashley. It seems music ran in their family!
A Talented Cellist and Organizer
Charles was a skilled cello player. He also helped manage musical performances called oratorios, which are like big musical stories, often with singing and an orchestra. He did this with his brother, General Charles Ashley.
Charles was an important part of the music world in London. In 1793, he helped start the Glee Club, which was a group for singing. He was also one of the first members of the Philharmonic Society of London, a famous musical organization.
In 1811, Charles became the secretary of the Royal Society of Musicians. This society helped support musicians. He had been a member since 1794. For many years, he played his cello for special concerts held by the society at St. Paul's Cathedral. After his father passed away in 1805, Charles and his brother Christopher continued to organize the oratorios. By 1817, he was playing cello in the band at the King's Theatre, a well-known venue.
Later Years
In his later life, Charles Jane Ashley managed the Tivoli Gardens in Margate for several seasons. This was a place where people could enjoy entertainment and music. He passed away there on August 29, 1843.
Towards the end of his life, Charles's health became weaker. The Royal Society of Musicians, which he had served for so long, helped him by providing payments for his medical care starting in 1835.
