Charles King Irwin went to Trinity College, Oxford for his education. After finishing his studies, he became a church leader in 1861. This means he was officially made a minister.

An incumbent is the main priest or minister in charge of a church. He served in places like Kilmore, Brantry, Keady, Clonfeacle, and Armagh.

In 1894, Charles King Irwin became the Archdeacon of Armagh. An archdeacon is a senior church official who helps the bishop manage a large area of churches. He also became the Keeper of the Public Library in 1913.
