Becoming a Lawyer: Charles Lysaght's Journey
Charles Lysaght was born in Dublin, Ireland, on September 23, 1941. He went to school at St Michael's College and Gonzaga College. After school, he studied law and economics at University College Dublin and Christ's College, Cambridge.
He became a barrister, which is a type of lawyer who argues cases in court. He qualified at King's Inns in Dublin and Lincoln's Inn in London.
A Champion Debater
Charles was a very talented debater. He won the first-ever Irish Times Debate for university students in 1960-61. He also won a special award from the Literary and Historical Society at University College Dublin.
He was even elected president of The Cambridge Union, a famous debating society, in 1964. He won against Vince Cable, who later became a well-known British politician. This shows how skilled he was at public speaking and arguing his points.
Working in Law and Government
From 1967 to 1970, Charles taught law at King's College London and University College London. At the same time, he was working as a barrister.
He then became a part-time professor of law at King's Inns in Dublin. In 1970, he joined the Irish Department of External Affairs as a legal adviser. This department deals with Ireland's relationships with other countries.
Later, he worked for the Irish Law Reform Commission for ten years. This commission helps to update and improve Ireland's laws. He also served on the board of the Irish Civil Service Building Society for many years.
Charles was also part of a government committee that looked at EU Fisheries Policy. He was also a member of the Advisory Board for the National Archives of Ireland.
Since 1969, Charles Lysaght has written special articles called obituaries for The Times newspaper in London. These articles tell the life stories of important Irish people after they have passed away.
Beyond Law: Hobbies and Interests
Charles Lysaght is also a keen cricketer. He played for several cricket clubs, including Pembroke Cricket Club and the Cambridge Crusaders. He was even president of a travelling cricket club called the Leprechauns in 1998.
He has also been involved with alumni groups for his universities. He was the first chairman of the Cambridge Society Irish branch. Today, he is the chairman of the Oxford and Cambridge Society of Ireland.
In 2019, he married Alyson Gavin, who is a genealogist (someone who studies family histories).
