The Charles Magnuson Three-Decker is a special old house in Worcester, Massachusetts. It's called a "three-decker" because it has three apartments, one on top of the other. This building was built around 1912. It's a great example of a building made in the Colonial Revival style. This style was very popular when many new homes were being built in the area. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. This means it's an important historical building.

What is a Three-Decker House?

A three-decker house is a type of apartment building. It has three separate homes, one on each floor. These buildings were very popular in New England, especially in cities like Worcester. They helped provide homes for many families.

The Charles Magnuson House Design

The Charles Magnuson Three-Decker is located in Worcester's Belmont Street neighborhood. It stands three stories tall. The roof has a pointed shape, called a gable. The outside of the house is covered with modern siding.

The front of the house is not perfectly even. On the right side, there is a porch with three levels. Square posts hold up each part of the porch. On the left side, there is a round window area that sticks out. This round area has two windows on each floor.

Special Features of the House

The very top part of the house, under the roof, is shaped like a triangle. This is called a pediment. Some parts of the house have changed over time. For example, the roof used to have decorative brackets, but these are now gone. The porches also used to have round posts instead of square ones. The areas between the windows on the round bay used to have wooden shingles. A window area that has many sides, like a polygon, sticks out from one side of the house.

History of the Charles Magnuson Three-Decker

This house was built around 1912. This was near the end of a big building boom in the Belmont Hill area. During this time, many three-decker houses were built. They provided homes for new people moving to Worcester.

Who Lived Here?

Many of the homes in this area were built for immigrants. These were people who came from other countries, mainly Sweden and Finland. They often worked in the steel and wire factories in northern Worcester.

Charles Magnuson was the first owner of this house. He worked as a foreman in a metal goods factory. A foreman is someone who supervises other workers. Some of the first people who rented apartments in the house included a machinist, a cabinetmaker, and a bookkeeper. A machinist works with machines, a cabinetmaker builds furniture, and a bookkeeper manages financial records.
