Charles Stewart (1764–1837) was a British scholar who spent much of his life studying languages and cultures from the East, especially India. He worked for the British army in India and later became a respected professor. He helped translate and publish many important books from languages like Persian, Arabic, and Hindustani.

Stewart's Early Life and Career

Charles Stewart was born in 1764. His father, Poyntz Stewart, was a captain in the army. In 1781, when Charles was about 17, he joined the Bengal Army. This was part of the East India Company's army in India. He served there until 1808, reaching the rank of major.

While in India, Stewart developed a strong interest in local languages and cultures. In 1800, a new school called Fort William College was started in Calcutta (now Kolkata). This college was set up to teach British officers about Indian languages and customs. Charles Stewart became an assistant professor of Persian there.

A Professor in England

In 1806, Stewart returned to England. The next year, he became a professor at the East India College in Haileybury. He taught Arabic, Persian, and Hindustani languages. He held this important teaching job until 1827.

During his time as a professor, Stewart worked hard on translating and editing many books. These books were important for understanding the history and culture of the East. His work helped many people in Britain learn about these fascinating parts of the world.

Stewart was recognized for his knowledge. He became a member of important groups like the Royal Academy of Sciences of Munich. In 1831, he received a special gold medal from the Oriental Translation Fund. This award showed how much his work was valued. Charles Stewart passed away in Bath, England, on April 19, 1837.

Stewart's Family Life

Charles Stewart was married twice. His first wife was Amelia, the daughter of Sir W. Gordon of Embo. Later, in 1828, he married Anne. She was the daughter of Reverend Nicholas Holland and the widow of J. Reid. Charles Stewart did not have any children.
