Charlie Brown's Fresh Grill (also known as Charlie Brown's Steakhouse) is an American restaurant chain. It serves casual dining meals. The company started in Washington Township, New Jersey. Today, you can find its restaurants in Scotch Plains, New Jersey and Woodbury, New Jersey.

The Story of Charlie Brown's

Charlie Brown's Steakhouse began in 1966. Three businessmen started it in Warren Township, New Jersey. The very first restaurant was on Valley Road in Warren Township. It was famous for its prime rib. They also had a special house salad. This salad came with egg, shrimp, and catalane dressing. You could also choose a salad bar instead.

Growing the Restaurant Chain

The restaurant became very popular. This success helped them open many more locations. They expanded across New Jersey. They also opened restaurants in nearby states like New York and Pennsylvania.

Changes in Ownership

A company called CB Holding Corp. first owned Charlie Brown's. In 1997, the restaurant was sold to Castle Harlan. Then, in 2005, Trimaran Capital Partners bought it. Since April 2011, Praesidian Capital has owned Charlie Brown's Steakhouse. Praesidian Capital is a private equity company.

What's on the Menu?

Charlie Brown's offers many different dishes. You can find steak, seafood, and sandwiches. They also have salads, chicken, and BBQ ribs. Pasta and burgers are on the menu too. A special item is their raisin bread. They also have a fresh salad bar.

Financial Challenges and Reopening

In November 2010, the company that owned the restaurants faced financial difficulties. This led to a big change for the business. They had to close 47 restaurants. This included 29 Charlie Brown's locations.

A New Start

In 2011, a new company from New York bought Charlie Brown's Steakhouse. They paid $9.5 million for it. This new company, CB Restaurants Inc., took over 20 Charlie Brown's restaurants. Seventeen of these were in New Jersey. The COVID-19 pandemic later caused more locations to close. One of the last remaining restaurants is in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. The Woodbury location reopened its doors on April 18, 2022.
