Charlie Crow started his career in radio. In 1971, he became the very first disc jockey (DJ) for a local radio station called CKSN-FM. A DJ plays music and talks on the radio. He worked there for four years, entertaining listeners in his community.

First Steps in Politics

Charlie Crow first tried to become a politician in 1975. He ran for a seat in the Northwest Territories Legislature. This is like a parliament or government body for the Northwest Territories. He ran in the Keewatin area, but he did not win. Peter Irniq won that election. After this, Charlie Crow spent several years working in local politics.

Becoming an MLA

Charlie Crow ran for the Northwest Territories Legislature again in 1987. This time, he won! He became the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Hudson Bay area. He won against the person who was already the MLA, Moses Appaqaq.

A Special Achievement

When Charlie Crow became an MLA, he made history. He was the first blind lawmaker in the Northwest Territories. To help him do his job, the computers in the legislature were updated. They added special computer programs and printers that could make documents in Braille. Braille is a system of raised dots that blind people can read with their fingertips. He served as an MLA until 1991.
