Charlotte Caroline Wilhelmine Bachmann (born November 2, 1757 – died August 19, 1817) was a very talented German musician. She was a soprano (a singer with a high voice), a harpsichordist (someone who plays the harpsichord, an old keyboard instrument), and a composer (someone who writes music).

Charlotte was born in Berlin, Germany. Her father, Wilhelm Heinrich Stöwe, was also a musician. From a young age, Charlotte studied singing and how to play the harpsichord. When she was just nine years old, she performed for the first time in the Liebhaberkonzerte, which means "Amateur Concerts." These concerts were started by Friedrich Benda.

On September 20, 1785, Charlotte married Karl Ludwig Bachmann, a violist (someone who plays the viola) from Berlin.

A Key Figure in Berlin Music

In 1791, Charlotte Bachmann became one of the twenty people who started the Berlin Singakademie. This was a very important music academy in Berlin. She played a big part in making sure that a special piece of music, Der Tod Jesu by C. H. Graun, was performed every year. This tradition continued at the Berlin court until 1884!

Charlotte was known as a great performer in Berlin. One of her songs was even published in a music magazine called Clavier-Magazin in 1787. She passed away in Berlin in 1817.

Charlotte Bachmann wrote several songs. One of her known works is:

  • "Mädchen wenn dein Lächeln winket" (meaning "Girl, when your smile beckons"), which she wrote in 1787.
