Charlotte Gleadowe-Newcomen, 1st Viscountess Newcomen facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Charlotte Gleadowe-Newcomen, 1st Viscountess Newcomen, was an important lady from Ireland who lived a long time ago. She was born into a well-known family and later received special noble titles from the King. She passed away on 16 May 1817.

Who Was Charlotte Newcomen?

Charlotte was the only child of Edward Newcomen. Her father was a wealthy landowner. His family was also related to the Newcomen baronets, who held a special noble title. This meant Charlotte was the only person who would inherit her father's property and wealth.

Her Family and Marriage

On 17 October 1772, Charlotte married William Gleadowe. He later became a Member of Parliament, which means he helped make laws for the country. In 1781, William was given the noble title of a baronet. This meant he was called "Sir William Gleadowe-Newcomen."

Becoming a Viscountess

Charlotte herself received a noble title on 29 July 1800. She was made Baroness Newcomen in the Peerage of Ireland. This was a special honor given to her by the King. The title was created to honor her husband, William. However, it was given to Charlotte so that William could continue to serve in the House of Commons. The House of Commons is a part of the government where elected officials work.

The family received even more honors a few years later. On 25 January 1803, Charlotte was made Viscountess Newcomen. This was an even higher noble title. Both of these titles were set up so they would pass down to her husband's male heirs.

When Charlotte passed away, her eldest son inherited her titles. His name was Thomas Gleadowe-Newcomen. He also inherited his father's baronet title.
