The Chatsworth Apartments is a historic apartment building in Detroit, Michigan. It is located in the Midtown area, right on the campus of Wayne State University. This building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 because of its special history and design. Today, it provides homes for students and families connected to the university.
What Does the Chatsworth Apartments Look Like?
The Chatsworth Apartments is a tall building with nine floors. It is shaped like the letter "L" and is made from strong concrete. The outside is covered with tan-colored bricks and tiles. A cool feature for its time was an underground parking garage. This garage could hold up to 65 cars!
The building's front has three main parts. The bottom two floors form a heavy base. They have fancy decorations like white stone and orange tiles. There are also decorative railings, called balustrades, on the second-floor windows. A clear, fancy edge, called a cornice, sits above the second floor.
The middle part of the building includes floors three through eight. Here, you can see three strong vertical sections that look like tall columns. The windows on the ninth floor, and also on the second floor, have a special pointed shape called Gothic arches.
Inside, each floor from the third to the ninth usually has ten apartments. These apartments come in different sizes. Most of them have a living room, a dining area, a kitchen, a bedroom, and a bathroom.
History of the Chatsworth Apartments
The Chatsworth Apartments was built in 1928. It was designed by an architecture company called Pollmar, Ropes & Lundy. The T.F. Norris Company, a realty company, had it built. The building cost about $560,000 to construct. This was a lot of money back then! It was built to help house all the new people moving to Detroit in the 1920s.
In 1943, a company called Bondholders Management Inc. bought the building. Later, Wayne State University became interested in buying the Chatsworth. The university finally bought it in February 1961.
As of 2016, Wayne State University still owns the building. It is used as housing for students who are studying at the university. This includes undergraduate students (those working on their first degree), graduate students, and students in professional programs.
The university also allows families with children to live in the Chatsworth Tower. Children living there attend schools in the Detroit Public Schools system. For example, younger students might go to DPS Foundation for Early Learners @ Edmonson. Older students attend King High School.
